1. Know your product dimensions and weights (15 min)
Weigh and measure every product in its shipping packaging (not just the product itself — include the box, padding, and insert). Record the weight in pounds/kg and dimensions in inches/cm. Carriers charge by the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight (length x width x height / a divisor, usually 139 for domestic). A light but large box can cost more than you expect.
2. Calculate your real shipping cost per order (15 min)
- USPS (US): Best rates for packages under 1 lb. First Class Package starts around $3-4. Priority Mail starts around $8.
- UPS/FedEx: Better for heavier packages (2+ lbs). Negotiate rates once you hit 50+ shipments/month.

For international shipping, USPS First Class International is cheapest for small items. For larger orders, look at DHL eCommerce or regional carriers.

- Free shipping (bake cost into product price): Best for conversion. If your product is $25 and shipping costs $5, price the product at $30 with free shipping. Customers psychologically prefer this.
- Flat rate: Charge a fixed amount ($5.99, $7.99) regardless of order contents. Simple and predictable. Best when your products are similar sizes.
- Real-time carrier rates: Pass exact carrier costs to the customer. Most transparent but can cause sticker shock at checkout.
- Free shipping threshold: "Free shipping on orders over $50." Increases average order value while covering your costs on larger orders. This is the most popular strategy for a reason.

In your platform's shipping settings, create zones: Domestic, Canada, EU, Rest of World. Set rates for each zone. Start with domestic only if international feels overwhelming — you can add international shipping later.
