Product Photo Setup With a Smartphone: No Studio Required
Budget 2-3 hours for a full product photoshoot. Professional-looking product photos are the single biggest conversion lever on your product pages, and you can achieve them with just a phone.
1. Set up your DIY photo studio (15 min)
- A window: Natural side lighting is the best free light source. Shoot during the day, positioning your product next to a large window. Avoid direct sunlight — overcast days or shaded windows give the softest, most flattering light.
- A white background: A $3 white posterboard from any office supply store works perfectly. Curve it from the wall to the table to create a seamless "infinity" background with no visible edge.
- A tripod or stable surface: Even a stack of books works. Camera shake is the enemy of sharp photos.

Turn off flash — always. Turn off HDR mode for product shots. If your phone has a Portrait mode, don't use it for products (it blurs edges). Use the standard photo mode and tap to focus on the product. On iPhones, lock exposure by long-pressing on the product.

- Hero shot: Front-facing, clean background, product centered. This is your main listing image.
- Back/alternate angle: Show the full product from another side.
- Detail shot: Zoom into texture, stitching, labels, or unique features.
- Scale shot: Show the product next to a common object (hand, coffee cup, coin) so customers understand the size.
- Lifestyle/in-use shot: The product being used in a real-world setting. This is what sells.
For every product, capture:
